This is a handmade Van Dyke Brown photograph, made in June 2024 from a digital photograph, taken February 2023 in the house that I had lived in for thirty years, on the day that I moved out.
When I first arrived at the June Hedditch Artist Residency at the Julia Street Creative Space in Portland, Victoria in November 2023, I was struck by the similarity of the two places. Nothing was square.
The residency is located in a building that was once the Union Inn, which was apparently owned sometime between 1855 and 1870 by my great great great grandfather Thomas Anderson, although I'm yet to be able to verify that. My six week stay in the residency in late 2023 was an important part of my ongoing research into the inheritability of embodied memories of place. In early 2024 I was lucky enough to be able to return to the Julia Street Creative Space, to have a small exhibition of Cyanotypes, and to run two Cyanotype workshops at the Portland Bay Press.
